South Sudan Peace Agreement 2020 Pdf
Categories: Uncategorized

The peace agreement between the Sudanese interim government and the Sudan Revolutionary Front (SDF), a broad alliance of armed movements and other movements, and Minni Minawi`s Sudan Liberation Movement is not yet complete as it does not include two other major armed movements. Sudan has a unique opportunity to adopt a democratic transition, but there is no room for complacency. Comprehensive reforms and a unified democratic front will be the key to peace, freedom and justice, as well as continued international pressure. After nearly a year of hard work in Juba, the agreement is comprehensive and addresses the fundamental issues of the Sudanese crises in Darfur, both regions and other marginalized regions, albeit in a mixture of regional and national protocols. This is a major part of achieving the vision of a democratic “New Sudan” based on respect for the diversity of the Sudanese people and equal citizenship, without religious, ethnic, cultural or gender discrimination. After signing the Juba peace agreement on 31 August, Sudan is looking to a better future, an important first step in bringing peace to conflict zones and laying the foundations for democratic transition and economic reforms across the country. The reintegration of displaced persons and refugees, as well as national reconciliation and national healing, remain important tasks of the UNTG. “18 The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) estimates that approximately 1.3 million children under the age of five will be acutely malnourished.19 In a report of 17 April 2020 entitled COVID-19: Protecting African Lives and Economies, the Economic Commission for Africa estimated that more than 300,000 Africans could lose their lives as a result of COVID-19, adding that the pandemic could lead to nearly 27 million people in extreme poverty. On 7 June 2020, South Sudan recorded 1,317 confirmed cases of COVID-19.21, which is expected to increase in line with continental and global trends. For example, government health expenditures for COVID-19 personal protective equipment, test kits, quarantine facilities and equipment (including fans and beds, infrared thermometers and medical aprons) will still be penalized.
